Well, here I am in Washington DC. Millions of people are gathering around to witness a monumental and historical event.
I am speaking of course, of my Top Albums of 2008 speech.
I cannot list them in favouritist to least favouritist, because i like some of the equally favouritist but in different ways.
Favourirititis.
Favour Tits.
Anyways, absolutely my two favourite albums were these two:
 | Fleet Foxes - "Fleet Foxes ( + Sun Giant EP)" Ya, this is on a ton of top lists this year. That's because it's really good. I am a fan of "folky" music. Check out my Will Oldham collection. It's big. Thus, I dig this shit. Vocal harmonies abound! So good!
|
 | Plants + Animals - "Parc Avenue" I checked this out on a WHIM after reading a review. I liked it instantly, which doesn't happen often. It grew on me more and more until I liked every song, even the self-indulgent instrumental at the end. I managed to catch a full FIVE MINUTES of them live a few months back. I just found out they are playing Calgary on March 21 so maybe I can see other songs. Like the Fleet Foxes, a definite folky hippy vibe here, but a bit more rocking.

As for bands that you don't listen to whilst wearing moccasins and dancing in the dirt, here are some other great album.
 | Cut/Copy - "In Ghost Colours" These Australian guys make that cool new sound I would call "indie dance rock" music. Or some shit like that. This album is full of great songs, quite simply. Sometimes with sort of dumb lyrics, but that's ok for "dance" type music, I think. A nice amount of guitars makes it sound like My Bloody Valentine at times (well, in a few songs anyways). Catchy, well done.
|
 | M83 - "Saturdays=Youth" I love this band to death because it sounds like a band I want to be in. Synth heavy but sounds like a shoegaze band. Do people use that term? I don't know. Awesome album. For me, no standouts like their previous album, but it's a much more consistent album.
|
 | Silver Jews - "Lookout Mountain Lookout Sea" Basically each Joos album for me is like another chapter of the BIBLE to a Christian. Which Silver Jews David Berman is not. He's a Jew. And a brilliant songwriter!
|
 | Bonnie Prince Billy - "Lie Down In The Light" You could say the same about BPB as I just said for Silver Jews. Although I don't think he's jewish. Produced one of my favourite songs of his ever, "I'll Be Glad".
|
 | Blitzen Trapper - "Furr" I saw this Portland band opening for Stephen Malkmus. Think Bob Dylan crossed with some 70's rock and ... I dunno. It's really good though!
|
 | Damien Jurado - "Caught In The Trees" I just discovered this dude this year, finally, after seeing his name on Secretly Canadian catalogs for years. I like it. Good mostly depressing acoustic-based songs!

There now you can go do something else.
